How do I correct an erroneous tax payment?
An “erroneous tax payment” occurs when you pay the taxes for the wrong property account.
If the erroneous payment was made online, from our payment website at broward.county-taxes.com notify the Tax Collector’s Office immediately by email at revenue@broward.org or by phone at 954-831-4000, as payments can only be cancelled until approximately 1:00 pm the following day (EST).
When reporting the erroneous payment: state the tax account you paid in error, the tax account you should have paid, and the amount of your payment. If we are notified quickly enough, we can completely cancel/void the online payment that was made in error.
If we are unable to cancel/void the erroneous payment, you must complete the steps discussed below by making a certified mail demand on the property owner whose taxes you paid in error, seeking a reimbursement of funds.
Broward County Tax Collector
Broward County Records, Taxes and Treasury Division
Attn: Erroneous Payment Section
115 S Andrews Ave, Room A-100
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301
How long do I have to recover the money?
The taxpayer must request the refund in writing by certified mail to the owner of the property that benefitted from the erroneous payment, asking to receive the refund within 45 days from the date the certified mail letter is sent. Requests for refunds of taxes that were paid in error must be made within eighteen months from the date of the erroneous payment, and before the property on which taxes were paid is transferred to a third party for consideration.
How long does the property owner have to reimburse me?
The owner of the property on which the taxes were erroneously paid must reimburse within 45 days of demand. If the owner of the property fails to reimburse within 45 days, you may apply to the State of Florida Department of Revenue through Broward County Tax Collector for a refund. Your application should include:
- a copy of the written request for reimbursement mailed to the property owner
- the return receipt showing that the original request was mailed to the property owner
- proof of payment (original paid tax receipt) and cancelled checks
- a Completed Application for Refund of Ad Valorem Taxes (DR-462) (PDF)
